The Value of EHR to the Community

A fair amount has been written about the value of Electronic Health Records or Electronic Medical Records from the perspective of the provider and the patient – what about the Community?

A recent article by John Glaser in www.HIStalk.com does an excellent job of pointing out the value of EHR for mining data for health research on issues such as drug side effects.  This offers more credible rationale for some subsidization of the use of EHR systems.

While the article points out the potential use of EHR data across very large populations of patients, the same principals hold true for even a solo provider using EHR.  If the EHR makes it ten time easier to extract data from patient’s records, how much easier is it to recall patients with an EHR that are on a discontinued medication?
