EHR vs. EMR - Why is Sevocity an EHR?
Earlier this year at Sevocity when we were developing our plans for marketing expansion, we re-examined everything, including whether we are an EMR or an EHR.
There was a lot of passionate discussion at Sevocity headquarters. Most vendors were calling their systems EMRs. By using EHR would we be left out? More importantly, what is an EHR and how is it different from an EMR?
We did our research. We didn't find a lot of help but there were some research papers and other attempts to describe the difference between an EMR and an EHR. While there were no definitive and consensus definitions, there was one common theme - EHR, more than EMR, implies Interoperability.
Interoperability is a PASSION for Sevocity - so much so that we are probably the only vendor in this business that will create an HL7 interface to any other system quickly and at no extra charge. Our quest for interoperability includes state registries/immunization programs, Health Information Exchanges (HIEs), and any other value-added method for securely sharing critical patient information to provide better patient care.
Once we distilled the common element of Interoperability from the EMR vs. EHR debate, the question of whether or not we should call Sevocity an EHR or an EMR was quickly answered. EHR it is!
