Is your data secure?

Almost daily I see an article about data security.  These articles almost always discuss a company or organization having data stolen or someone introducing a new data protection product.

The medical industry is a goldmine for scammers and thieves who want to steal identities. Think about all of the personal information you collect and what someone could potentially do with that information.

Here are few things you can do to prevent data theft:

  •  Everything requires a password. If your employees have multiple passwords, purchase software that will store their passwords; think of it as a safe for passwords. This will help employees avoid writing passwords in unsecure locations (ie. sticky notes and word documents).
  •  Secure your wireless network. This is not only a good tip for you office, but also for your home.
  •  Disable access for past employees.  When someone leaves your practice, make sure you have the usernames disabled to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Dispose of old data properly. This consists of old credit card receipts, computers, CD’s, back up tapes, and anything else that is no longer used or needed.

These recommendations are just a few basic steps you can take to ensure data safety and the safety of your patients!
