EHR Buying Secrets per the Wall Street Journal (Sort of)
Today’s Wall Street Journal article titled Shopping Secrets of the Pros applies to buying an EHR as much as it does clothes.
If you want the best opportunity to find the right EHR fit share this information with the companies you are looking at:
Telegraph that you are serious:
- What is your time frame?
- Why are you getting an EHR?
Download the wardrobe (write down what’s in your closet):
- Are you already using an EHR? If so, why do you want to change?
- What Practice Management/Billing system are you using? Do you want to change? Why or why not?
Declare your don’ts:
- As crucial as what you like is, so is what you hate.
- Do you have any firm requirements? If so, share them early and pass early on a vendor that doesn’t meet them.
- What are you concerned about?
Overshare:
- The more details the more the sales rep can help you.
- Most companies don’t want to sell you a product you won’t keep and most pay their sales reps in a way that means the sales rep doesn’t want that to happen either.
Be Budget Blunt:
- Being coy about how much you plan to spend leads the sales rep to waste your time offering you a system or services you have no intention of purchasing.
- Factor in all the costs. Like a suit that requires dry cleaning, some EHRs become very costly when you factor in server maintenance, trainin, extra cost modules and other costs.
